RESEARCH and SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:

Brief statement of areas of research and scholarly interest, including current projects:

My primary research area is in cancer prevention and control, with a focus on nicotine dependence and smoking cessation. I have research experience in smoking cessation behavioral treatment, pharmacotherapy, and pharmacokinetics in both clinical and community-based settings. My broad goal is to unravel the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying health disparities due to tobacco use and other preventable chronic disease risk factors among underserved populations. My current research is focused on examining behavioral, genetic and environmental determinants of persistent smoking and smoking-related health disparities among understudied populations such as minority populations and hospitalized smokers. My research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Cancer Society (ACS). These studies include the Kick It at Swope project,-enhancing tobacco use treatment for African-American light smokers, TCTAB- a longitudinal study of tobacco use among American Indian Tribal College Students, EQUIP- Increasing post-discharge follow-up among hospitalized smokers and 2KanQuit- smoking cessation intervention for  partners of  hospitalized smokers. I am also involved in studies on cancer prevention, Child Safety, Injury Prevention and HIV/AIDs in Nigeria.

Increasing post-discharge follow-up among hospitalized smokers

This U01 is part of an NIH Cooperative Agreement entitled, “Effectiveness Research on Smoking Cessation in Hospitalized Smokers.” Included in the project are one coordinating center and 5 research projects designed to enhance dissemination of tobacco treatment in hospitals. Our project is set in two Kansas hospitals that have dedicated tobacco treatment interventionists on staff. It is a randomized-controlled trial of the relative effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness, of warm hand-off versus fax referral in linking hospitalized smokers with quitline services. In the warm hand-off condition, patients will be linked via their room or cell phone to quitline in order to complete enrollment and their first counseling session prior to discharge.
